Rüstem Paşa Mosque Detailed Info
The mosque is regared as the most ornamented of all mosques. Its splendid tile panels fascinate everybody. The Grand Vizier of Süleyman the Mognificent, Sultan Rüstem Pasha most probaly commissioned Minar Sinan to have it built in 1561. Rüstem Pasha was known as one to have had many buildings and complexes constructed in many places of the empire.
With its dome mounted on eight pillars, the mosque was damaged by fire in 1660 whereas its dome collapsed during the earthquake of 1766. It is known that the original interior and exterior appearance of the mosque was partially changed following the renovation in the 18th century.
Upon the request by Rüstem Pasha all interior walls of the mosque were covered by tiles. Those ceramic tiles are the products of the period when Iznik wall tile production reached its zentith regarding technique and patterns. The panel found to the left side of the entrance gate is the best abstract interpretation by placing all the classical decorative elements tile art in an asymmetrical way.
