Rumeli Fortress Detailed Info

Fatih Sultan Mehmet had this fortress in the European part built during the preparations of the conquest in an incredibly short time in 1452. Rumeli Hisarı is probably the best example of typical Ottoman fortress architecture. Right across it, in the Anatolian side, is a smaller fortress, Anadolu Hisarı.

The Rumeli Fortress is the most imposing sight on the Bosphorus straights, dating back to the 15th century. With the ramparts and walls still in excellent condition due to vigilant refurbishment and upkeep, the Fortress is both an overwhelming open museum as well as the most dramatic spot in Istanbul for the summertime open-air concerts, which typically begin in June. You have not experienced Turkish music until you have done so while sitting inside the Ottoman castles walls, looking out over the straights as the music plays.

Open between 9am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-5pm everyday except Monday
