Çinili Köşk Detailed Info

The pavilion that was after the wish of Sultan Mehmet II is the oldest building in Topkapı Palace. The Selcuk infuluence is apparent in its architecture. The interior wall coating of the building is attractive with colorful tiles, coloured mosaics, hexagonal tiles ornamented with gold. These decorations combine the traces of Selcuk and early Ottoman periods. Besides the good of sultans, extremely beautiful and valuable tiles and ceramics from various periods are exhibited here. Iznik, was the main tile production centre of the age in terms of quality. In the second half of 15th century, after Mehmet II acceded, the production of the white-blue ceramics began for using in the palace in Istanbul. These ceramics were much more qualified than the ones produced in other Muslim contries. The potters in Iznik had realized a technical revolution and could produce ceramic in marvelous colors and quality at very low tempratures. After 1545, large amonts of tiles was was ordered to the restoration of the exterior surface of Kaya Church in Jerusalem (Kubbetussahra, built in 691), the oldest temple of Islam. This resulted in a great development in tile production between 1555 – 1620. At the same time, the craftsmen in Iznik managed to reach a bright red or seal candled colour after a short trial period. With this bright colour, the effects of colour spectrum has increased. They also managed to draw tulips, rozes, carnations, bell flowers, hyacinths and other flowers on the tiles with their smallest details. These flowers were generally drawn with date leaf shaped ornaments, spear shaped leaves that had zigzags on their borders or rounded branches. Almost all the pattrens were bigger than the surface a single tile that was either square or rectangular shaped. Their bright glaze, variety of colour and the patterns on the white background were creating a cheerful environment. The Iznik tiles and ceramics in the buildings reached their peak during the Kanuni Sultan Süleyman period. Besides Çinili Köşk, Bağdat Köşkü, Harem Dairesi, Rüstem Paşa Camii and Sokullu Mehmet Paşa Camii are the leading examples of ottoman tile craft.
